So thankfully this week went by pretty quickly. As you can tell from my last entry, I had to do my long run on Monday due to some weekend slacking (and multiple xmas parties). The rest of the week seemed to fly by. I was able to get in a good 35 minute cardio workout on Tuesday at the gym. It was pretty much limited to the elliptical, but was a pretty good workout none the less. I have found there are two downsides to working out on the elliptical: 1 - After about 20 minutes my toes go numb. I think this is the result of leaning forward too much when I try to dig it out on the higher resistance levels. 2 - Its just boring. The rest of Tuesday was spent at Shattuck hospital working an overnight shift. Needless to say, Wednesday was a wash since I worked until about noon, wrapped presents and then slept all afternoon to recover.
Thus it brings us to Thursday. So, in an attempt to avoid the same mistakes that I made last week Renee and I decided to get our long runs for this week out of the way before the weekend hit since we knew that there would be about a 0.5% chance of us getting them done, at home, around our family, with all the celebrating and holiday cheer going on. Thankfully, the good news was that today I was able to sneak out of work early. Again, I through on my 10 lbs of cold running gear and headed out. Today's weather was kind of deceiving. The report said it was partly cloudy, high temp of 30-32, but gusts of wind from 20-30 mph. The one mistake I made today was I think I overdressed for the weather since during the run I found myself opening my sweatshirt and taking off my had and neck warmer at times.
Regardless, my run started out like any other. I started out a little bit too fast and had trouble finding a good pace. Like I have said before, for these long runs I aim for a pace of 10 min / mile that way I can get the distance in. My first mile or two I kept looking at my pace and I was around a 9:20, which I knew would hurt my endurance for a long run. I pretty much did the same route as Monday. East Broadway to the end of West Broadway, down W 1st to D Street, D Street to Summer, Summer down to South Station, South Station to the Seaport, Seaport back to Southie, E 1st to Castle Island, Castle Island to home. The run went well, for some reason not as well as my other long runs. I was doing fine up until about 4 miles when I had to take my first 90 second walk. I think my early pace is what got me into trouble here. After 90 seconds, I was able to bounce back in stride and was right on my goal pace of 9:50. I got to the 5.25 mile mark and this is where I crumped. I don't know if it was the fact that my previous long run was only 3 days earlier and I just didn't have the gas in the tank, but I ran into some problems here. Over the next 1.75 miles, I ended up walking 3 times for about 90 seconds each. It kept getting harder to start back up and get into a good rhythm. To add to the difficulty, the wind gusts near Castle Island was definitely closer to the 30 mph range ... against me. Needless to say, the thought of two days off celebrating xmas helped me gut it out. In the end, 7 miles completed in 1 hr 12 minutes. As always, not a record setting pace ... but I did it.
Now time to celebrate. Merry Christmas.

Its Getting Cold Outside !!!
Alright, back again for another entry. So this entry represents the first time where my personal schedule made my training a little bit harder than it should have been. So, as I mentioned in the last entry, my schedule last week was pretty horrible. Thankfully for me though, this past weekend was the first weekend where I had both days off since before Thanksgiving. As such, Renee and I had a few Christmas Parties planned. As is always the case, we ended up enjoying the parties a little bit too much and I spent most of the weekend laying low on the couch recovering from a busy work week and a couple of late nights at the xmas parties. Always in the back of my mind was the fact that I needed to get in a long run, but since my schedule was lightening up this week I should be able to fit it in on Monday since I was planning on getting out of work around 230 or so. The only problem with my plan, which I didn't find out until Monday, was that I didn't take the weather report into the big picture.
So fast forward to Monday. The weekend is over and I am planning on fitting in a 6-7 mile run. Unfortunately, Mother Nature didn't get that memo and decided to drop the first winter type weather on Boston. The morning started out OK, but as the day progressed it started to get cold with temps in the 20's, windy with gusts of 15-20 mph and there was always the occasional flurry of snow. As I had planned earlier, I got out of work around 230 or so and headed home on the bus. Renee was trapped on the Cape, fighting with the insane traffic that gets caused by the first snow storm of the year (where somehow most New Englanders magically forget how to drive in the snow and end up in the snow bank), so when I arrived home it was just our dog Chloe there to great me. I sat on the couch for about 5 minutes trying to think of what to do, as I figured there were a few options that I could potentially take: 1- Change into my gym stuff, hop back on the bus, and do my long run at the YMCA (from my previous blog you know that I dread being on a treadmill for long periods of time due to boredome), 2- Try to wait it out for a bit and if the weather didn't improve I would scrap the long run for the week (unfortunately the old "I'll do it tomorrow" wasn't an option since I was working a 30 hr shift), or 3- Man up and just do the run outside because this is what I get for not having done it over the weekend as I had planned. This one played out in my head for a solid 5 minutes before I made a decision ...
So ... one pair of underarmour spandex pants, warm up pants, underarmour long sleeve, regular long sleeve shirt, insulated sweatshirt, hat, gloves and neck warmer later ... I was outside getting ready to go for my run. Honestly, didn't know if it was a great decision or not but deep down I keep reminding myself that this is really a once in a lifetime opportunity for me. Looking ahead, I don't know when I will have the time or ability to train and get a spot in the Boston Marathon so I want to make sure I do everything I can to complete it.
So I started our Garmin watch and headed out. Not going to lie, it felt like I was carry a 20 lb weight with all of the winter gear I was suited up in. I headed out on my normal route ... down E 2nd Street to Dorchester, up the hill and around the Dunkin Donuts to West Broadway. When I hit the Dunkin Donuts which is about the 0.5 mile mark I definitely had my doubts as to whether or not I was going to be able to finish this run. It was windy ... and anyone who has run in Southie knows that for some reason it is the only place on earth that no matter which direction you run the wind is in your face. Not only that, but as there was about 1/4 inch of fresh snow on the ground, the wind was able to kick it up which made it even colder.
I managed to push through a little bit despite the cold. Thankfully, once I had finished that first mile I started to warm up. My face was no longer cold from the powdery snow, instead it seemed to just melt when it him me. I had also built up some body head and my chest, arms and hands were back to normal. I kept going on the run and eventually I had finished two miles in just about 20 minutes. Overall, it didn't seem like a bad pace given the conditions and all the clothes I was wearing. I took a short 30-45 second walk and then picked up my pace again. Since I didn't want to dare running around castle island since the wind is honestly about 10x stronger down there, I decided to run down Summer Street to South Station. Once at South Station I hooked a right and ultimately came back towards Southie through the Seaport. At this point in time, I had developed a good stride / pace and surprisingly felt pretty damn good. I was definitely getting some weird looks as I was the only one out there who was running (literally, not even I saw anyone else dumb enough to do it). I hit the 4 mile mark at 41 minutes and felt good.
My doubts of whether or not I would finish the run had pretty much gone away, now the only thing I was fighting was the fact that it was getting dark out and that the snow was building up alittle. I hooked back on Summer Street heading back into South Boston. When I got to the corner of E 1st and Summer I was at 4.6 miles, which was perfect since I knew that running down to the end of E 1st and back was 0.75 mi each way and that would put me at my goal of 6. I took another 1 minute walk before digging out my last leg. Unfortunately, the run back down E 1st was pretty hard since the wind literally put me at a standstill a couple of times.
In the end I completed 6 miles in cold, windy and snow drift conditions in 1 hr 1 minute. Overally, I was pretty happy with that performance for a few reason. 10 min / mile is really what I aim for on these long runs. I have learned from a lot of reading and my own experience (which isn't much) that the most important thing is doing the time and getting in the distance. This is a huge contrast from how I used to run back in med school where once I couldn't run any more I was done. I have found that walking a few times but completing the set distance, even if the time sucks, is the most important thing. The last thing this run proved to me, is that I am able to run in cold weather. Before this I had had my doubts as to whether or not I woul be able to manage when the true New England winter weather hit, but I think this puts it to rest.

Intervals
So I am doing some catch up on my blogging since last week was a pretty busy week. I ended up doing two overnights during the week which really screws up your work out schedule since you tend to be pretty wiped post call, even if you are able to scrounge a 3-4 hour nap. Thankfully, with my new membership at the YMCA across the street from the hospital I was able to get in a pretty good workout in between my day shift Thursday (7a-5pm) and my night shift that started at 7 that night.
Not sure if anyone else feels this way, but I think its pretty hard to get into a longer run that is on a treadmill. It just gets boring after about 15 minutes. Since I had done my long run in gorgeous weather the a few days before, I decided to do some interval training. I have always found that both the time and distance seem to go by faster during intervals. It gives you periods where you really focus hard on your speed and then short breaks where your mind can kind of zone out while you recover.
I started off by running a mile at a 9 minute pace with an incline of 3. Since running on a flat treadmill is way easier, almost like running downhill outside, I always try to have some sort of significant incline on it to make it more close to running outside. Once I finished that first mile, I increased the speed to a 6-6:15 min / mile pace. I was able to do about 1/3 of a mile at that pace and dropped it to a 10-10:30 min/mile pace for about 60-90 seconds. In total, even with the few minutes of walking that I did, I was able to run 3.25 miles in just about 28 minutes. It probably won't place me in the money in any race I enter, but I was still pretty happy with the performance.

Another Good Day
So do to extreme laziness I decided not to write an entry last night. I am happy to say though that I had another great run last night. As always, I was feeling pretty exhausted towards the end of the day, but the fact that it turned out to be another great day in Dec with temps in the 40's helped give me the motivation to fit in my run. So like Saturday, it was mild with temps in the 40's and barely any wind at all. The difficult part about run, like most of my other mid week runs, is that they take place at night ... in the dark.
The goal for this run was to get in 3.5 miles. Right from the start I knew it was going to be a good run. I got into a good rhythm early and kept a good pace without feeling like I was over working it. I completed my first mile in ~ 9:06 and was worried that at this pace I was going to gas out before my 3.5 mi were up. I kept telling myself just to keep a good pace and that if I felt like I was going to gas to back off a little bit. I made turn down E 1st street in just over 18 minutes. This turn marks the two mile point in my runs and really help serve as a reminder that my training is already starting to pay off. Just a few weeks ago I vividly remember being gassed to the point that I actually had to stop and walk for two minutes at this turn and now I was running through it at about 1 minute faster than I had expected.
My normal run takes me down E 1st St towards castle island, which during the day is my favorite place to run. It really gives amazing views of the city when you hit the far part of the loop. At night, however, there are some sketchy people hanging out down there so I choose to stay on the close part and just run around the part of the water close to broadway. As I made my way back down East Broadway towards home I heard our Garmin watch beep signaling that another mile had passed. I looked down to see what my time was for my third mile and much to my surprise it was 8:56! While I was happy with the pace I was keeping, I knew I still had the hardest part of my run ahead of me ... the big hill that encompasses about 1/4 mile where N / M streets intersect broadway. I just made sure I dug it out and then recovered some of my time on the down hill. I ended up crossing K / E 2nd St ... which normally serves as my finsh line in ~32 minutes with a total distance of 3.6 miles.
Overally, this run helped me a lot. During points of the run I realized that the conditioning was coming along especially since I put really good runs together in a row: First my 6 miles in 56 minutes for distance, and then a good pace run of 3.5 in 32 minutes. I am also started to realize that this blog helps me as well because I am able to reflect back on these experiences. I helps me to realize the improvements I am making and also helps me keep focus on both my short term and long term goals.
Unfortunately, no runs today. As I am working overnight at Shattuck I really didn't have any time to fit in training today. Tomorrow is going to be a challenge as I have always had difficulty mustering up the energy to work out after these 30 hour shifts even if I do get a couple hours of nap time in. My goal is going to be to do an interval 2 mile run. I figure keeping the workout to < 20 minutes should help keep me motivated to do it. Guess we will see.

Busy But Productive Week
So I apologize to all my blog followers since I haven't really made very many entries this week. Actually, as of now its just Renee since I haven't told anyone else about my blog quite yet, so hopefully she isn't too upset about the lack of reading material. So this past week has been an extremely busy and tiring week. I was actually the attending on the Gen Med service at Tufts which mean long hours and multiple weeks without a day off. My normal schedule entailed wakingup at 5:15 am and getting home around 6:30 pm. With those work hours 7 days a week for 2 weeks straight it was tough to find the energy to fit in my training runs. Thankfully, I was able to get up the energy for a few training runs.
The other obstacle that I am starting to face with these training runs, is that the weather is starting to turn pretty cold outside. I have never been a huge fan of running outside in the cold, in fact, I hate doing activities outside when I am freezing. In order to beat the cold I Renee and I took a trip to Sports Authority to stock up on some cold gear for running outside. As it stands now, I have an under armor cold gear top and bottom, under armor fleece, hat and gloves. The gear has been working really well and so far this year the coldest run that i have been on was when it was 25F outside. I have found that once you get about 1 mile in, your hands warm up and you really don't feel the cold anymore.
So, as for my runs this week I was able to fit in three good training runs. I started on a run on Monday which was a rough day at work. I decided to make this a tempo style run and ended up running approximately 2.5 miles total distance, running ~ 8:15 mile with intermittent periods of walking. My next run happened on Wednesday and once again due to pure exhaustion from work I didn't get the distance that I had wanted to. I had a solid 2.5 mile run and completed it in approximately 22-23 minutes. My goal for that run was actually 3.5 but I just didn't have enough gas in the tank to do it. Looking ahead to the end of the week I new I had to have a good long run. It just so happened that Saturday was one of the nicest days in a long time. It was sunny, 44F and for the first time ever ... there was no wind in South Boston. I started the run with the goal of completing 5 miles. On my previous long runs I tend to start out running too fast and it really hampers my ability to get the distance on want. On this run in particular, I made sure to pace myself for the first few miles and ended up completing the first 3 miles at about a 9:30 pace. As the run went on, I felt great. The sun was out around castle island and like I said before, for once there was no wind! Its hard to explain how perfect of a day it was, but by the end of my run I had completed 6 miles in 56 min. This was definitely a small achievement as I hadn't expected to run that far. That being said, its also scary to think that this is only about 1/4 of the total distance that I am hopefully training for.
Looking forward to this upcoming week it is going to be another difficult training week. I am working overnight two days out of the week which makes training difficult. I have never really been able to bounce back and get workouts in after my 30 hr shifts, but we will see. My goal is going to be to sqeeze in runs Mon - Wed - Thur and then have my long run be Saturday morning before our xmas party.
Guess we will see ...

5-10k Phase
So this is officially my second blog entry. So since my original entry the other night I have had 2-3 more good workouts. I have to say that its tough to workout when my schedule is so busy. As it stands now, i am waking up around 5:30 am to get to work for 6:15 am. If I am lucky, I get out of work form 5-6 pm. After that sort of day, I run into the problem that everyone else does ... being tired after work and not wanting to do anything but relax. I think this is exactly what I would have done if I wasn't trying to train for this race.
Monday served as my off day after my long run of 4 miles on Sunday. It was good to relax and give the muscles and joints some time to recover. Tuesday served as the perfect example of a day when I got home from work and didn't feel like doing anything. Then the thoughts of the race started creeping into my head and I realized that I really had to go for a run ... I have a long way to go and only a finite amount of time to get there. Will a little more encouragement from Renee I suited up in my under armor cold gear and fleece and headed out. Thankfully, it wasn't all that cold and I got into a good rhythm early in my run. I ended up running 3.5 miles in about 32-33 minutes, which calculates out to a 9-9:15 / mile pace. Although I didn't feel good when I got home from work, I felt great after the run ... no where near a "runners high" but definitely felt good. I realized though during my run it was time to get a new pair of sneakers (sorry Tom, can't handle the vibrams with longer distances) as I can feel the support in my shoes starting to wear. Today, I decided to do some non impact cardio and just hit the Y where I did the elliptical trainer for about 35 minutes.
My goals for the rest of the week are to try to get in a session of Yoga X and then hopefully a 5 mile run this weekend. In addition to the training, I think I am going to get some new sneaks and stock up on some more cold gear for these winter runs.
