Busy But Productive Week

So I apologize to all my blog followers since I haven't really made very many entries this week.  Actually, as of now its just Renee since I haven't told anyone else about my blog quite yet, so hopefully she isn't too upset about the lack of reading material.  So this past week has been an extremely busy and tiring week.  I was actually the attending on the Gen Med service at Tufts which mean long hours and multiple weeks without a day off.  My normal schedule entailed wakingup at 5:15 am and getting home around 6:30 pm.  With those work hours 7 days a week for 2 weeks straight it was tough to find the energy to fit in my training runs.  Thankfully, I was able to get up the energy for a few training runs.
The other obstacle that I am starting to face with these training runs, is that the weather is starting to turn pretty cold outside.   I have never been a huge fan of running outside in the cold, in fact, I hate doing activities outside when I am freezing.  In order to beat the cold I Renee and I took a trip to Sports Authority to stock up on some cold gear for running outside.  As it stands now, I have an under armor cold gear top and bottom, under armor fleece, hat and gloves.  The gear has been working really well and so far this year the coldest run that i have been on was when it was 25F outside.  I have found that once you get about 1 mile in, your hands warm up and you really don't feel the cold anymore.
So, as for my runs this week I was able to fit in three good training runs.  I started on a run on Monday which was a rough day at work.  I decided to make this a tempo style run and ended up running approximately 2.5 miles total distance, running ~ 8:15 mile with intermittent periods of walking.  My next run happened on Wednesday and once again due to pure exhaustion from work I didn't get the distance that I had wanted to.  I had a solid 2.5 mile run and completed it in approximately 22-23 minutes.  My goal for that run was actually 3.5 but I just didn't have enough gas in the tank to do it.  Looking ahead to the end of the week I new I had to have a good long run.  It just so happened that Saturday was one of the nicest days in a long time.  It was sunny, 44F and for the first time ever ... there was no wind in South Boston.  I started the run with the goal of completing 5 miles.  On my previous long runs I tend to start out running too fast and it really hampers my ability to get the distance on want.  On this run in particular, I made sure to pace myself for the first few miles and ended up completing the first 3 miles at about a 9:30 pace.  As the run went on, I felt great.  The sun was out around castle island and like I said before, for once there was no wind!  Its hard to explain how perfect of a day it was, but by the end of my run I had completed 6 miles in 56 min.  This was definitely a small achievement as I hadn't expected to run that far.  That being said, its also scary to think that this is only about 1/4 of the total distance that I am hopefully training for.
Looking forward to this upcoming week it is going to be another difficult training week.  I am working overnight two days out of the week which makes training difficult. I have never really been able to bounce back and get workouts in after my 30 hr shifts, but we will see.  My goal is going to be to sqeeze in runs Mon - Wed - Thur and then have my long run be Saturday morning before our xmas party.
   Guess we will see ...
